Reports issued by the government recently, are working to improve social care recruitment. How can you pursue a Children’s Services career while taking advantage of the current climate?

The current government pilot programmes were launched in the UK in 2008, consisting of 11 social work remodeling schemes intended to make improvements in the social care service sector. With these types of programmes, social care has been looking into increasing development, including increased investment in recruitment and adding new positions in the social care field.

So what does this mean for you? Well, with further investment and overall service revision come increased opportunities for social care service professionals, including those with expertise in Children’s Services.

Children’s Services is a diverse area of social care, full of potential opportunities for professionals with a range of skills and experience. When you are looking toward social care recruitment within Children’s Services, you can go down any one of several paths, such as:

Protecting kids

Children with mental health issues

Children with physical health issues

Kids that live in care

Kids who have left care recently.

Children in residential housing

It depends on what you like and what turns you on. Skills from your current social care role may be easily transfered from that of your position, or of one that was previously held within the social sector.

However, if you are new to social care or are considering a change in career, you need to consider some of the necessary personal and professional skills to become a Children’s Services social worker.

If you choose to pursue a career in Children’s Services, you should consider that you may be working with young people of all ages, from very young children to teenagers approaching the age of independence. Regardless of how old the people are that you deal with, your job will probably include young people who might be somewhat sensitive, maybe because of previous experiences or from complete or partial reliance on the social service system.

One must be dedicated, patient, compassionate and open-minded in order to work with children that are vulnerable. Working with certain age groups or working with children who have experienced traumatic pasts, including neglect or abuse, can be challenging. Before choosing a social work career in Children’s Services, educate yourself regarding the complex needs of children damaged by abuse and neglect, as well as the challenges you will encounter as you work with them. Using a social work recruitment company can be the best way to find the right job.

Some of those skills may be built up from experience outside of a professional setting, such as an experience caring for a loved one. However, a career in Children’s Services also requires certain qualifications. In order to be a social worker located in the UK, it is necessary to be approved by the General Social Care Council (GSCC), meaning you must have a social care degree acceptable by the GSCC. Remember, as in most employing organizations, you will probably have to submit to a criminal background check, as well as ensure that you meet the necessary educational qualifications.
